The CMHS Volunteers

The Coryell Memorial Healthcare Volunteers are a wonderful component of the support team to the healthcare system. The volunteers were organized in early 1977, with the Gatesville Garden Club donating $528 to help them get started. Margaret Nesbitt was the group’s first president.

Velva Riddle now leads the group of 82 active members as the 2009 President. The Volunteers also have dozens of lifetime and sustaining members. A record 11,100 hours were volunteered during the 2007-2008 year. Volunteers perform a variety of services including welcoming visitors, calling Bingo for residents, delivering mail, working in the salon, visiting patients and raising money for needed improvements and equipment. The group donated $25,000 to the campaign for the emergency room expansion project, among others. Throughout the varied types of service, the volunteers make a large impact in the lives of our patients and residents. Junior Volunteers also work throughout the healthcare system during summer break and provide many of the same services.

Their combined efforts have earned the CMHS Volunteers numerous awards and statewide recognition as an exemplary hospital volunteer organization.
