Respiratory therapists are an integral part of a hospital's health care team. Each of our therapists is equipped to serve as a consultant to the physician in the treatment and management of respiratory problems. Each therapist works with nurses and other team members in coordinating and implementing an overall patient care strategy.
The role of the respiratory therapist is to administer and assess the effectiveness of prescribed treatments, to evaluate the effects on other body systems, to evaluate the effects of non-pulmonary abnormalities on the cardiopulmonary function, and to relay this information to other members of the health care team. These functions are accomplished by therapeutic administration of oxygen, rehabilitation techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and maintenance of natural and artificial airways. Specific tests are performed to assist the physician to diagnose and facilitate the monitoring and treatment of patients. These tests include the Pulmonary Function Test which is a measurement of ventilatory volumes, pressures, flows, and the analysis of blood and respiratory gases.
Pulmonary Function Lab
Pulmonary Function Testing Laboratory offers comprehensive pulmonary function testing in a state-of-the-art laboratory.
What are pulmonary function tests?
• Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) measure how well your lungs take in and exhale air and how efficiently they transfer oxygen into the blood. There are several different kinds of tests your healthcare provider may order:
• Spirometry measures how well the lungs exhale (breathe out).
• Lung volumes measure how well the lungs breathe in (inhale) and how much air they contain.
• Diffusing Capacity for Carbon Monoxide (DLCO) shows how efficiently the lungs transfer oxygen from the air into the bloodstream.
